"Am I doing something wrong, or is it this telescope?" the calleron the telephone asked. "It doesn't seem to focus, and I am neversure what I am pointing at."
I was speaking with yet another frustrated owner of a $200 department-store telescope, the kind that comes in an attractive package announcing "450-Power Astronomical Telescope." The caller admitted that the impressive complement Of accessories included with the instrument as well as 'I'1' packaging embellished with color photographs of comets and nebulas had been too much to resist. But now he was wondering whether he had made a mistake."I can't seem to keep it steady-everything's a blur," he moaned."The only eyepiece that shows anything at all is the one marked K20mm.What am I doing wrong?"
"Nothing." I sighed. I had heard it all before, hundreds of times."It's not you." I assured him. "It's the telescope."
I went on to explain that his department-store 60mm refractor telescope was an example of what many experienced amateur astronomersuncharitably but aptly call "Christmas trash scopes." I told him thathis frustration was perfectly normal. The classic trash scope priced at$300 or less is designed not for ease of use but to appeal to rank beginners and well-meaning gift buyers, Well-known brand names alsolure the novice. but they mean nothing, since all telescopes in this classare manufactured at the same few plants in Asia, regardless of the name.
Even expert observers become frustrated when trying to operatethese instruments, with their unnecessarily complicated equatorialmounts and jiggly tripods. The accessories supplied with these telescopes, such as Barlow lenses, image erectors, Sun-projection screens,filters and high-power eyepieces (5mm to 12mm), are so cheaply madethat they are almost impossible to use and are included merely to givethe impression of a fully equipped instrument. If $300 is the budgetlimitation, binoculars or a simpler, easier-louse scope, like the one shown on the facingpage, top, is the preferred route.
If you have a telescope like this, use itwith the l5mm-to-25mm low-power eyepiece and the right-angle prism diagonalfor introductory views of the Moon. Saturn'srings and Jupiter's moons. And if you do notalready own a telescope like this, consideryourself lucky to have read this first.

Which type of telescope is best: refractor, Newtonian reflector or Schmidt-Cassegrain?
Much of this chapter is devoted to comparing the positive andnegative aspects of various telescope designs. Please read it carefullybefore investing in a new telescope. The short answer is that each typeperforms admirably-if it is manufactured to sufficiently high standards. Fortunately, most commercial telescopes meet this criterion(exception: the trash scopes" referred to on page 65). The telescopemarket has become very competitive in recent years, and the familiaradage "You Get What You Pay For" is a useful starting point.
Can a nature spotting scopesubstitute for an astronomicaltelescope?
Not really. These instrumentsare made for daytime observingand, considering their cost, area poor substitute for an astronomical telescope of the same price.For one thing, they are usually configured for straight-through viewing-not very convenient for looking overhead. However, if a naturescope is all you have, it's certainlybetter than no telescope at all.
Can I see where the astronautslanded on the Moon?
Yes. The corner of the Sea ofTranquillity, where the first humanslanded on the Moon in is easy to spot (see Moon maps onpages 140 and 141). But what mostpeople mean by this question is:Can I see the lunar lander? Sorry.No telescope on Barm is powerfulenough to do that. The lander isroughly the size of a delivery van-far too small to be detected at 100times the distance from New York to Los Angeles.

Why are the images upside down?
All astronomical telescopes invert the image. And, to add to theconfusion, telescopes with prism or mirror diagonals also flip it leftto right. To get things right side up, a prism or extra lenses are required.In astronomy, though, we want as "pure" an image as possible, usingthe optimum number of optical elements. An erect image counts forland viewing but is largely irrelevant in astronomy. This is alwaysdisorienting for the beginner, but with practice, you'll get used to it.

Can I keep warm while observing by looking through a window with a telescope or binoculars?
Trying to avoid cool outside air by pointing a telescope throughwindow glass is almost always futile. Virtually all glass panes introducedistortion to telescopic views. Binoculars are not affected as much, butfor critical definition, viewing through windows is a no-no. Opening thewindow will not work either, at least for telescopes, because the flow ofair through the window will generate very poor seeing conditions.
Can I see the rings of Saturn?
Yes. Any telescope with a magnification of 30x or more will showthis magnificent adornment of the sixth planet. Saturn is unforgettablein a good-quality backyard astronomer's telescope .
How do I align the finderscope?
Using a low-power eyepiece, aim the telescope at a distant chimney or antenna during the daytime, then use the adjusting screws toset the finderscope's cross hairs so that thev point at exactly the samespot the main telescope does. Tighten the finderscope adjusting screws.That's all there is to it.
How often should I clean the optics?
Too much cleaning is worse than too little. There is always an opportunity to scratch a lens or mirror during casual cleaning. Dust accumulation on the lenses and mirrors is inevitable and will not noticeably affect performance if you keep it to a minimum by covering theoptics when not in use. If you must clean, first remove loose dust witha lens blower, then use a cotton ball dampened with distilled water toremove dust and stains. Never rub hard, Gently dry with a clean, lintfree lens cloth. Telescope mirrors are especially delicate and shouldbe cleaned as rarely as possible. For eyepieces, use a Q-tip dipped incamera-lens cleaning fluid. Follow with a dry Q-tip. If in doubt, leave it.
Why don't stars look like tiny disks?
Alpha Centauri. the nearest star beyond our solar system, is thesame si/e as the Sun but 250,000 limes farther away. That makes itmuch too small to appear as a disk in even the largest telescopes. Somestars (Betelgeuse, for example) are hundreds of times larger than theSun but far more distant than Alpha Centauri.

What are the numbered dials on the mount for?
These dials are the right-ascension and declination circles. Theycan be used to aim the telescope at a celestial target. In practice,though, the dials on beginner-level telescopes seldom have the accuracyrequired to find anything. Thev are there mainly to give the instrumenta "scientific" appearance.

"to appeal to rank beginners" - це аж ніяк не "для удовольствия начинающих"! Більш точний переклад - "для привлечения в ряды начинающих", щось таке... блін, я б, може, і взявся, але ніяк свою журнальну працю не можу раціонально спланувати - особливо після зміни формату номера.

     Вопрос к знатокам английского и астрономии. Просматривая тему НОВИНИ, заходила по ссылкам, зашла и на эту.

 Теперь ежедневно, уже 5 дней получаю письма, в которых товарищ на английском мне пишет о работах Ньютона, Габбла, теории Большого взрыва, происхождении Вселенной и т.д. Поскольку я на английском читаю нормально, а писать-некогда по словарю проверять правописание и составлять ответ, да и на русском такой инфы полно, отослала письмо, что не пишу на русском. Но письма продолжают идти.
 Прошу, кто владеет английским, подскажите, кто такой (или такая) Перри Маршал, что за организация, которая называется примерно "Отпечатки космической истории" и чего им надо? Мне такая настойчивость как у свидетелей Иеговых, уже кажется ненормальной

на рассылки это не похоже, тк содержит советы и ссылки, какими я могу воспользоваться, не умея писать на английском, спрашивает о моем уровне знаний по астрономии, те участвует в диалоге, в котором я половины не понимаю
 А о Боге и религии пока не было ничего, хотя я почему-то жду, что от истории изучения Вселенной, Ньютона, Хаббла и теории относительности незаметно  перейдем к теологии

 Спасибо за помощь. Объяснили, что это сайт с идеей доказать существование Бога, используя и знания астрономии. Поскольку и Ньютон, и другие физики были глубоко верующими людьми, думаю, им легко доказывать. Просто мне не хватит знаний и времени с ними общаться.
